Jeff Davis (born Jefferson Davis; May 6, 1862 – January 3, 1913) was a Democratic politician who served as the 20th Governor of Arkansas from 1901 to 1907 and in the United States Senate from 1907 to 1913. He took office as one of Arkansas's first New South governors and proved to be one of the state's most polarizing figures. Davis used his silver tongue and aptitude for demagoguery to.

Arkansas State Senator Jakes C. Files pleaded guilty today to wire fraud and money laundering charges for orchestrating a scheme to obtain approximately $46,500 in state government funds through fraudulent means, and to one charge of bank fraud for obtaining approximately $56,700 in loan proceeds, also through fraudulent means.

Acting Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Duane A. Kees for the Western District of Arkansas made the announcement.

Files, 45, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, who represents Arkansas’s state legislative district No. 8 in the Arkansas State Senate, pleaded guilty before Chief U.S. District Court Judge P. K. Holmes III of the Western District of Arkansas to an information charging him with one count of wire fraud, one count of money laundering and one count of bank fraud.

As part of his plea, Files admitted that, between August 2016 and December 2016, while serving in the Arkansas State Senate, he used his senate office to obtain government money known as General Improvement Funds (GIF) through fraudulent means and for personal gain. Specifically, Files authorized and directed the Western Arkansas Economic Development District, which was responsible for administrating the GIF in Files’s legislative district, to award a total of $46,500 in GIF money to the City of Fort Smith. To secure the release of the GIF money, Files prepared and submitted three fraudulent bids to the Western Arkansas Economic Development District. Files then instructed an associate to open a bank account under that person’s name to conceal his role as the ultimately beneficiary of the GIF award. When a first installment of approximately $25,900 was wire transferred from the City of Fort Smith to the associate’s bank account, the associate withdrew approximately $11,900 of the funds in a cashier’s check made payable to FFH Construction, Files’s construction company, and the rest in cash. The associate then hand-delivered the check and the cash to Files who, in turn, deposited the check into his personal bank account.

Files also admitted to submitting a materially false loan application in November 2016 as part of a scheme to secure approximately $56,700 from First Western Bank.

The FBI investigated the case. Trial Attorney Victor R. Salgado of the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyra Jenner of the Western District of Arkansas are prosecuting the case.

Former President Donald Trump accused Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of 'wasting money' in the Alabama Senate primary, further exposing the rift between the two wings of the Republican Party.

Trump said incumbent Sen. Richard Shelby's endorsement of Katie Boyd Britt to become his successor, along with McConnell's alleged funneling of money to Boyd Britt, is 'absolutely outrageous.'

'She is not in any way qualified and is certainly not what our Country needs or not what Alabama wants,' Trump said of Britt in a Saturday night tweetmail, calling on Alabamans to vote for Rep. Mo Brooks because 'he stands for America First, and everything Alabama wants, [and] he also has my Complete and Total Endorsement.'

Britt, who served as Shelby's former chief of staff, entered the race for the open seat in early June and soon earned the backing of the incumbent senator, who toldPolitico she is 'probably the best-qualified candidate to come along in a long time.'

Brooks, a Trump loyalist who was among the first to object to the electoral college results that certified President Joe Biden as the victor of the 2020 presidential contest, gained Trump's support shortly after entering the race to replace Shelby.

Representatives for Shelby and McConnell did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.

Trump and McConnell have offered divergent approaches to the upcoming 2022 midterm elections. While the Senate minority leader has focused on supporting incumbents, Trump has preferred to endorse those loyal to his movement, particularly in the wake of his second impeachment trial.

Following the Jan. 6 siege of Capitol Hill, 10 Republicans joined all Democrats in the House to impeach Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection. Though Trump was acquitted in the Senate, seven Republicans joined all Democratic senators in voting to convict him, and the perceived slight by these GOP members has attracted Trump's ire ever since.

Trump, who has enjoyed enduring popularity with the GOP base since his departure from office, has released several revenge endorsements in recent months, with many of them, such as Max Miller in Ohio, mounting primary challenges to incumbents who voted in favor of Trump's impeachment. Trump also endorsed Frank Eathorne, a primary challenger to Rep. Liz Cheney, whom he called 'incompetent' following her vote to impeach him, which in turn led to her ouster from GOP leadership.

McConnell has instead opted to support his Senate colleagues, with the president of the Senate Leadership Fund, a McConnell-aligned super PAC, saying of Sen. Lisa Murkowski — who faces a stiff primary challenge from a Trump-endorsed opponent following her vote to convict the former president — saying, 'Many politicians put themselves first, but Lisa Murkowski always puts Alaska first.'

'McConnell will always stick up for his incumbents,' a top GOP Senate strategist said.

Trump was previously impeached along mostly party lines on two Ukraine-related charges in 2019 before he was acquitted in the GOP-led Senate.
